59th Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic
Commencing at 7.15am, arriving in Glen Innes at 11.30am, expected to finish in Inverell at 1.15pm.
The iconic 59th Grafton to Inverell Cycle Classic will again pass through Glen Innes on its journey from the Clarence Valley along the Gwydir Highway to the New England Highlands. The event has the reputation as the toughest one day cycle race in the country and is part of Cycling Australia’s National Road Series. It attracts the leading riders in the country as they take on the 228km journey including the formidable 17km climb up the Gibraltar Range.
Enjoy the spectacle as the riders contest a ‘sprint’ point adjacent to the Australian Standing Stones before descending into Glen Innes and detouring down Taylor Street where there is a ‘Feed Station’ manned by supporters. The riders then re-join the Gwydir Highway for the ride to Inverell.
Please note that the Gwydir Highway between Tindal Road (15km west of Grafton), and Bald Nob Road (25km east of Glen Innes), will be closed to all westbound vehicles (Grafton to Glen Innes) from 7.15am to 1.30pm, and all eastbound vehicles (Glen Innes to Grafton) from 5.15am to 1.30pm. The Gwydir Highway will remain open to traffic between Glen Innes and Inverell; however, road access and management will be controlled by the NSW Police Service and approved Traffic Controllers. Riders are expected to be on this section of road between 11.30am and 4.30pm.
